If you smell burning plastic near an outlet, switch, or your electrical panel, stop using that circuit now. Turn off the breaker that feeds it if you can identify it safely, and call a licensed electrician. A burning smell is not something to watch for a few days. It means something in the wall is heating up.

What that smell usually means
Burning plastic or a fishy, chemical odor around an outlet almost always means heat where there should not be any. The most common causes we find:
- A loose connection. A wire that has backed out of a screw terminal arcs against the contact. Arcing makes heat, heat melts the plastic housing, and melting plastic is what you smell. This is the single most common cause we see.
- Back-stabbed wiring. Older or builder-grade outlets let the installer push wires into holes in the back rather than wrapping them around screws. Those push-in contacts loosen over time. Very common in homes built or renovated in the 1970s through 1990s.
- An overloaded circuit. A space heater, window AC, or microwave drawing more current than the circuit was designed for. The wire heats along its length, and the outlet is where you notice it.
- Aluminum wiring. Homes wired between roughly 1965 and 1975 often used aluminum branch circuits. Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper, works itself loose at connections, and oxidizes. It is a known fire risk and needs proper remediation, not a simple outlet swap.
- A failing outlet or switch. Devices wear out. Contacts inside lose tension, especially where something heavy is plugged and unplugged often.
- Water intrusion. Moisture in a box from a leak above or a failed exterior seal causes corrosion and arcing.
What to do right now
- Unplug whatever is in that outlet, if you can do it without touching a hot cord or the outlet face.
- Shut off the breaker for that circuit. If you are not sure which one it is, and the smell is strong, shut off the main.
- Do not open the outlet or panel yourself. The problem is usually behind the device, and the wiring is still energized until the right breaker is off.
- Feel the wall around the box. If the drywall or the cover plate is warm, treat it as urgent.
- Call an electrician. If you also see smoke, scorch marks, or sparks, call 911 first.
When it is an emergency
Call the fire department, not us, if any of these are true:
- You see smoke or sparks
- The wall or cover plate is hot to the touch
- There are scorch or char marks around the outlet
- The smell is getting stronger rather than fading
- You cannot find or shut off the breaker
Everything short of that is still same-day work, but it is not a 911 call.

We isolate the circuit, open the device box, and find the actual heat source rather than swapping the outlet and hoping. That usually means checking every connection on the circuit, not just the one that smells, because a loose neutral three boxes away shows up as heat at the outlet you noticed.
We check for scorching inside the box, test the device under load, look at the wire gauge against the breaker size, and confirm whether the branch is copper or aluminum. If the box or the wire insulation is damaged, that section gets replaced. If the cause is an undersized or overloaded circuit, we tell you what it will take to fix it properly rather than putting the same device back in.

Do not just swap the outlet
This is the mistake we get called out to fix. A new outlet on a loose or overheated connection puts a fresh face on the same problem. The arcing continues behind the wall where you cannot smell it as easily, and the next symptom is often scorching inside the box or a tripped breaker that will not reset.
If the smell came back after someone already replaced the outlet, that is a strong sign the real fault is upstream in the circuit.
