When a panel upgrade is actually needed
- You are adding significant load. An EV charger, a heat pump, a pool heater, a whole-house generator or a kitchen renovation.
- You are out of physical space. No open slots, or a panel already full of tandem breakers.
- The panel is a known problem brand. Several panels installed from the 1950s to 1980s have documented failure histories, and some insurers now ask about them directly.
- There is visible damage. Scorching, corrosion, rust from a damp basement, or a bus that has overheated.
- Nuisance tripping across multiple circuits. Often a capacity problem rather than a circuit problem.
What a panel upgrade involves
A full service upgrade is more than swapping a box. It usually means new service conductors, a new meter enclosure, a new panel, a new grounding and bonding system brought up to current code, and coordination with the utility for a disconnect and reconnect. Expect the power to be off for a working day.
Sometimes you do not need all of that. If the service entrance is sound and only the panel itself is the constraint, a panel change without a full service upgrade is a smaller job. We tell you which one you actually need.
Grounding is the part people skip
Older Millburn homes frequently have grounding that met code decades ago and does not now. A panel upgrade is the point at which that gets corrected properly, with ground rods and water pipe bonding done to current requirements. An installer who leaves the old grounding in place has not really upgraded anything.
Permits and inspection
Panel and service upgrades require permits and municipal inspection, and the utility has to be scheduled. We handle the permit, the inspection and the utility coordination. Unpermitted panel work is a serious problem at resale and during a CCO inspection.

A diagnostic visit starts at $225, which covers the trip and the first hour of labor, including small fixes finished on the spot. Additional time is $125 per hour. If the repair turns into something larger, we price it before we do it.
