- No open slots, or tandem breakers filling the box
- Rust or corrosion, common in damp West Orange basements
- Any scorching or discolouration around a breaker
- Buzzing, warmth, or a burning smell at the panel
- Breakers tripping across several circuits rather than one
- Lights dimming when the AC or a large appliance starts
Grounding and bonding
This is the part that separates a real upgrade from a box swap. Requirements have changed substantially, and older West Orange homes routinely have grounding that was compliant when installed and is not now. A proper upgrade includes new ground rods and correct water pipe and gas bonding. If someone quotes you a panel upgrade without mentioning grounding, ask why.
