Emergency egress lighting and illuminated exit signs are not optional equipment. In New Jersey commercial buildings they are code-required, they must be tested on a schedule, and the records must be available to an inspector. We install, repair, test and maintain them across northern New Jersey.
The testing requirement most buildings fail
Emergency lighting and exit signs require a monthly function test of roughly 30 seconds and an annual test of 90 minutes at full duty, with written records kept. This is where most buildings fall down. The fixtures are on the wall and the batteries have quietly died, so the first anyone knows is when an inspector presses the test button or, far worse, during an actual outage.
Batteries in these units typically last three to five years. A building that has never had them tested almost certainly has dead units.

Why LED retrofit usually makes sense
Older exit signs running incandescent lamps consume meaningfully more energy than LED equivalents and need relamping on a cycle. LED units draw a fraction of the power and effectively remove the relamping labour. Across a building with dozens of signs, the labour saving alone usually justifies it before the energy saving is counted.
