Are emergency and exit lights required by code?
Yes. Commercial buildings must have working exit signs and emergency egress lighting under New Jersey and NFPA code.

Can you retrofit old exit signs to LED?

Your testing obligations in New Jersey
Emergency and exit lighting is not install-and-forget. Under the Life Safety Code as adopted in New Jersey, every emergency light and illuminated exit sign in a commercial building has to be tested on a schedule, and the records have to exist when an inspector asks for them.
- Monthly: a functional test of at least 30 seconds on every unit, confirming it illuminates on loss of normal power.
- Annually: a full-duration test of 90 minutes, confirming the battery still carries the fixture for the required time. This is the test that finds dead batteries, and it is the one most often skipped.
- Records: written results kept and available for inspection. A fixture that works is not compliance on its own; the documentation is part of the requirement.
Self-testing and self-diagnostic fixtures handle the monthly test automatically and flag failures on the unit, which is usually the cheaper answer in a building with a lot of fixtures. We can specify those on replacement.
