What an EV charger install involves in a Maplewood home
Much of Maplewood’s housing stock predates the Second World War, and that shapes the job more than the charger brand does. Three things decide most Maplewood installations:
Panel capacity. A Level 2 charger needs a 240-volt dedicated circuit, usually 40 to 60 amps. Many homes near the Village and Memorial Park still run on 100-amp service, and some still have fuse boxes. We do the load calculation first. Sometimes there is room, sometimes we free capacity, and sometimes the right answer is pairing the charger with a panel upgrade. You get that answer before any work is quoted, not after.
The run to the car. Detached garages and long driveways are common in Maplewood. The distance from your panel to where the car actually parks is the biggest variable in price, because it sets the wire gauge and the trenching or conduit work. Chargers on the far side of a detached garage are routine for us, they just need to be priced honestly up front.
The permit. Electrical work in Maplewood is permitted through the Township Construction Division at 574 Valley Street, and the township has adopted EV charging provisions in its code. We pull the permit, meet the inspector, and close it out. Permitted, inspected work is also what keeps the PSE&G rebate available, since the rebate pays out after inspection.

PSE&G currently offers qualifying residential customers up to $1,500 toward a Level 2 charger installation, plus up to $5,000 toward a service upgrade if your home needs more capacity to support charging. That can offset most or all of a straightforward Maplewood install. We handle the paperwork side with you. Note for 2026: the federal 30C home charger credit expired June 30, 2026, and PSE&G’s old off-peak credit is now a time-of-use rate, so overnight charging still costs less, the enrollment just changed.

Frequently asked questions
Can I install an EV charger if my Maplewood home still has 100-amp service?
Often yes, but it has to be verified with a load calculation, not guessed. Some 100-amp homes have the headroom, many near the Village do not. When they do not, we either manage the load or pair the charger with a 200-amp panel upgrade, which PSE&G currently supports with up to $5,000 toward the service upgrade.
My garage is detached. Can you still run the charger there?
Yes, this is one of the most common Maplewood installs we do. The circuit runs underground or through conduit to the garage, and the distance is the main cost variable. We quote it flat after seeing the run.
Do I need a permit from Maplewood Township for an EV charger?

How long does the installation take?
Most single-family installations are done in a day once the permit is issued. Jobs that include a panel upgrade or a long trench to a detached garage can take longer, and we tell you that at the quote stage.
Does an EV charger work with the old wiring in a 1920s Maplewood house?
The charger gets its own new dedicated circuit, so the age of the house is not a barrier by itself. What matters is the panel behind it. If your home still has knob-and-tube wiring elsewhere, we will flag anything unsafe we see, but a charger install does not require rewiring the house.
