We install Level 2 home EV chargers across Millburn and Short Hills. EV adoption here is high, and so are the loads these homes already carry, which makes the capacity question the first one worth answering.
Big house does not mean big service
This catches people out. A large Short Hills home is not automatically on a large electrical service. Plenty of substantial properties here are still on 100 or 150 amps, sometimes with a panel added during a renovation rather than a genuine service upgrade. Central air, an electric range, a pool heater and a hot tub can absorb most of that before a charger is considered.
We run an actual load calculation rather than reading the main breaker and guessing. It takes very little time and it is the difference between a job that works and one that trips.
Two chargers
Two-EV households are common here, and the answer is usually not two full circuits. Load-sharing lets two chargers split a single feed intelligently, so both cars charge overnight without doubling the demand on your service. It is generally far cheaper than the service upgrade that two independent 50 amp circuits would require.
Long runs and detached garages
Larger lots mean longer runs, and long runs mean voltage drop. Undersized conductors over distance produce a charger that runs slow and warm. Getting the wire size right for the actual distance matters more here than in a house where the panel is on the garage wall.
Permits and incentives
EV charger installation requires an electrical permit and municipal inspection. We pull it and meet the inspector. Utility incentive programs generally require a passed inspection before paying out, and we handle that documentation as part of the job.
