Old houses, new cars
The homes that make South Orange worth living in were wired long before anyone imagined a car drawing 40 amps in the driveway overnight. That is not a problem, it is just the first thing to check. Every South Orange installation starts with three questions:
Does the panel have room? A Level 2 charger runs on its own 240-volt circuit, typically 40 to 60 amps. Plenty of pre-1940 homes near Montrose Park and in Seton Village still run 100-amp service. We do a proper load calculation before quoting anything. If the panel is short, the honest options are load management or a 200-amp panel upgrade, and PSE&G currently puts up to $5,000 toward the service upgrade when charging is the reason.
Where does the car actually park? Detached garages and shared driveways are everywhere in South Orange. The run from the panel to the parking spot sets the price more than the charger does, so we measure it and quote it flat. Exterior-rated equipment and underground runs to a detached garage are routine work for us.
Is the equipment right for a two-car future? If a second EV is plausible, we size conduit and capacity now so the second charger later is an easy add instead of a redo.
What it costs
Installations start at $1,500, including the dedicated circuit, permit coordination, and municipal inspection, with the final price driven mostly by distance from the panel. Everything becomes a firm written quote before work begins, and our rates are published on our pricing page.
PSE&G’s EV Charging Program offers qualifying residential customers up to $1,500 toward a Level 2 charger installation, plus up to $5,000 toward a service upgrade where the home needs more capacity. The rebate pays after the installation passes inspection, and we handle the permit and paperwork side with you. For 2026, note the federal 30C home charger credit expired June 30, 2026, and PSE&G’s off-peak credit has become a time-of-use rate. Overnight charging is still the cheap way to do it.

Frequently asked questions
Can an older South Orange home support a Level 2 charger?
Usually yes, once the panel question is answered. The charger runs on a brand-new dedicated circuit, so the age of the branch wiring elsewhere in the house does not block the install. If the load calculation shows the service is short, we pair the charger with a panel upgrade, and PSE&G currently helps fund exactly that combination.
Do you handle the permit with the Village of South Orange?
Yes. EV charger circuits are permitted electrical work, filed through the Village’s Department of Building and Code Enforcement at 76 South Orange Avenue. We pull the permit, meet the inspector, and close it out, which is also what makes the PSE&G rebate payable.
The car parks in a detached garage. Does that change the job?
It changes the price, not the feasibility. The circuit runs in conduit or underground to the garage. Run length is the biggest variable in any South Orange quote, so we look first and quote flat.
Can renters or two-family owners near Seton Hall add charging?
Owners of two-family and small multi-family properties can, and it is increasingly worth doing for tenant demand. We size for the building’s service and can rough-in for additional chargers later. Tenants should start with the property owner, since the circuit ties into the building service.
How fast will a Level 2 charger charge my car?
A Level 2 charger on a 240-volt circuit fully charges most EVs overnight, compared to days on a standard 120-volt outlet. That is why nearly every home installation we do in South Orange is Level 2.
