We install Level 2 home EV chargers throughout West Orange. The township has unusually varied housing, and the install is straightforward or involved depending almost entirely on which era your house comes from.
What decides your job
A Level 2 charger wants a dedicated 40 to 50 amp circuit. Three things determine whether that is simple:
- Service capacity. Many West Orange capes and split-levels from the 1950s and 1960s are still on 100 amp service, some on 60. A load calculation tells you whether a charger fits or whether you need capacity work first.
- Panel condition and space. Older panels are often full, extended with tandem breakers, or a brand we will not add load to.
- Distance to where you park. Llewellyn Park and the larger properties often mean long runs, detached garages, or both, which needs heavier conductors and sometimes trenching.
When capacity is tight
A service upgrade is not the only answer. Load-management devices let the charger reduce its draw automatically when the rest of the house is running heavy, which for overnight charging is usually invisible to you and considerably cheaper than upgrading the service. We will price both so you can choose.
Detached garages
If your garage already has a sub-panel with a capable feeder, the job is contained. If it is fed by one old circuit running the lights and a single outlet, which is common, that feeder needs replacing before a charger goes on it. Worth establishing early, because it is the difference between a half-day job and a full one.
Permits
EV charger installations require an electrical permit and West Orange inspection. We pull the permit and meet the inspector. It matters at resale, and utility incentive programs generally will not pay without a passed inspection.
