GFCI vs AFCI Outlets: What’s the Difference?

GFCI and AFCI are two safety devices that protect your home in different ways. They sound similar but do very different jobs – here’s the plain-English difference.

GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter)

A GFCI protects people from shock. It senses when current is leaking to ground – for example, through water or a person – and cuts power in milliseconds. Code requires GFCI protection in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, outdoors, and other wet or damp locations.

AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter)

An AFCI protects against electrical fires. It detects dangerous arcing – from damaged or loose wiring – and shuts the circuit down before it can ignite. Code requires AFCI protection on most living-area circuits in newer and updated homes.

Do you have them?

Older homes often lack both. Adding GFCI and AFCI protection is a meaningful, affordable safety upgrade – and it’s required when you update circuits or your panel.
