Adding a hot tub or pool in New Jersey? The electrical side is more involved than many homeowners expect – and it’s strictly regulated for good reason (water and electricity are a dangerous mix). Here’s what’s required.
A dedicated circuit
Hot tubs and pool equipment need their own dedicated circuit, usually 240-volt, sized to the equipment. If your panel is full, it may need an upgrade.
GFCI protection
Ground-fault protection is mandatory for pool and spa circuits – it’s what protects swimmers from shock.
Bonding and grounding
NEC requires that metal parts around a pool or spa be bonded together, creating an equal-potential grid that prevents dangerous voltage differences. This is a critical, code-required step.
Permits and inspection
Pool and spa electrical work requires a permit and inspection in NJ. A licensed electrician handles this.
