An outlet or its cover plate should always be at room temperature. Warm is a warning. Hot is a stop-now situation.
Do this first
- Unplug whatever is in it, if you can do so without touching a hot cord or the outlet face.
- Shut off the breaker feeding that circuit.
- Put your hand flat on the wall around the box. If the drywall is warm, the heat is not just in the device.
- Leave the breaker off until an electrician has looked at it.
What makes an outlet hot
- Resistance at a loose connection. Current forced through a poor contact turns into heat. This is the most common cause and it gets worse over time, not better.
- A high-draw appliance on an ordinary circuit. Space heaters are the classic offender in New Jersey winters. A 1,500-watt heater pulls about 12.5 amps continuously, which is right at the safe limit for a 15-amp circuit with nothing else on it.
- An undersized extension cord or power strip. Thin cords running heaters, window units or dryers are a frequent cause of melted outlet faces.
- Aluminium branch wiring. Homes wired from roughly 1965 to 1975. Aluminium loosens at terminations as it heats and cools, and it needs proper remediation, not a device swap.
- A worn device. Contact tension inside the outlet degrades with use, particularly where plugs are pulled frequently.
The space heater rule
If the outlet is only hot when a heater is running, you have found the cause but not the fix. A space heater should be plugged directly into a wall outlet, never into an extension cord or power strip, and should be the only significant load on that circuit. If you need heat in a room every winter, the real answer is a dedicated circuit rather than an outlet you keep checking.
