Portable generators: inlet box and interlock
A portable generator should never run through an extension cord into an outlet. The safe setup is a generator inlet box mounted outside, wired to a panel interlock kit. You plug the generator into the inlet, flip the interlock, and power your essential circuits without any risk of backfeeding the grid.
Standby generators: automatic transfer switch
A permanently installed standby unit pairs with an automatic transfer switch. When the power drops, the transfer switch isolates your home from the grid and brings your circuits onto generator power automatically.
