Older homes are full of charm and, often, outdated wiring. Here are seven signs it may be time to have your wiring inspected or replaced by a licensed electrician.
1. Knob-and-tube or cloth-wrapped wiring
Common in pre-1950s homes, these systems weren’t built for modern loads and are increasingly flagged by insurers.
2. Two-prong (ungrounded) outlets
Ungrounded outlets can’t safely handle today’s electronics and appliances.
3. Frequently tripping breakers
Occasional trips are normal; repeated ones signal overloaded or failing circuits.
4. Flickering or dimming lights
Especially when an appliance kicks on – a sign of strained circuits or loose connections.
5. Warm outlets, switches, or a burning smell
Stop using the outlet and call an electrician immediately – this is a fire risk.
6. Discolored or scorched outlets
Evidence of arcing or overheating behind the wall.
7. Reliance on extension cords and power strips
Usually means you don’t have enough properly placed circuits.
