The best time to wire for a smart home is during a renovation, while the walls are open. A little planning now saves expensive retrofits later. Here’s what to consider.
Plan your circuits and capacity
Smart homes add load – more devices, automation, EV charging, AV gear. Make sure your electrical service can support it before you finish the walls.
Hard-wire what matters
Wi-Fi is convenient, but hard-wired connections (Ethernet to key rooms, wired access points, wired cameras) are more reliable. Run cable while it’s easy.
Lighting and controls
Plan for smart switches, dimmers, and zones. Neutral wires at switch boxes are needed for many smart switches – easy to add during a remodel, costly later.
Future-proof
Add a few extra circuits, conduit runs, and outlets where you might expand. It’s cheap insurance.
