Every EV charger install starts with the same driveway conversation: “What EV charger should I buy?” Here is the answer I give my own customers – no affiliate links, no sponsorships, just what holds up after you install a few hundred of them.
Start with the connector, not the brand
In 2026 this is decision number one. NACS (the Tesla-style plug) is becoming the standard – most new EVs now ship with it. J1772 is the older standard your existing non-Tesla EV probably uses. If you plan to keep your current car for years, match its port. If you will trade up within a few years, buy a charger available in NACS or one with swappable connectors – otherwise you are buying an adapter later.
The four things that actually matter
- Amperage your panel can support. A 40-amp charger on a 50-amp circuit is the sweet spot for most homes – roughly 30 miles of range per hour, full overnight charge. Bigger is only better if your electrical service can feed it; that is a panel question, not a charger question, and it is the first thing we check.
- Hardwired vs. plug-in. Plug-in (NEMA 14-50) is flexible and fine up to 40 amps. To run 48 amps, code requires hardwiring. Outdoors, hardwired is the more weather-sound install.
- The app – this matters more than people think. With PSE&G’s time-of-use rates, scheduled overnight charging is where the savings live. A charger with a reliable app that holds its schedule pays for itself; a flaky app means your car quietly charges at peak rates.
- Safety listing and warranty. UL or ETL listed, period – it is what keeps your homeowner’s insurance and the manufacturer’s warranty on your side. The no-name bargain units on marketplace sites are not worth your house.
The short list I recommend
- ChargePoint Home Flex – the best all-rounder. Adjustable up to 50 amps, available in J1772 or NACS, excellent app with energy tracking and scheduling, UL listed and ENERGY STAR. If you want one safe answer, this is it.
- Tesla Wall Connector – the pick for Tesla households. Up to 48 amps hardwired, native NACS with a generous cable, integrates straight into the Tesla app, and supports power-sharing if you ever add a second unit.
- Emporia Smart Level 2 – the budget smart pick. 48-amp capability and real energy monitoring at a price well under the big names. The app is genuinely good for the money.
- Wallbox Pulsar Plus – the compact one. Small footprint, up to 48 amps, and smart solar integration if you have or plan panels.
- Grizzl-E Classic – the tank. No app, no Wi-Fi, just a heavily weatherproofed metal unit that shrugs off NJ winters. The right answer for detached garages and anyone who wants zero software in their life.
What it costs to install – and what PSE&G pays
Our EV charger installations start at $1,500 including the dedicated circuit, permit, and inspection. Qualifying PSE&G customers can currently receive up to $1,500 toward the installation – and up to $5,000 toward a service upgrade if your panel needs one. Buy a UL-listed charger with the connector your car uses, sized to what your panel can feed, from a brand whose app will not fight you – then have it installed on a dedicated circuit with a permit.
