How to prepare
Most outage damage is avoidable, and the preparation is cheap compared with what it protects. Know where your panel is and how to get to it in the dark. Keep flashlights rather than candles. If you rely on a generator, have it connected through a transfer switch or interlock – running one through an extension cord into an outlet backfeeds the utility line and can kill a lineman working to restore your power.
